Its a very popular Breakfast dish primarily of western India however now it is liked in most parts of India. The key ingredients of this dish are Poha or Chirwa, mustard seeds, curry leaves and Lemon juice. However, seasonal vegetables, peanuts potatoes may also be added as per personal choice.

  1. Poha – 3 cups
  2. Chopped coconut – ¼ cup
  3. Onion cut into slices – 2/3 cup
  4. Green Peas – ¼ cup
  5. Lemon juice of 1 big lemon
  6. Chopped green chili – 1 tblspn
  7. Grated/chopped ginger 1 tblspn
  8. Dry red whole chili -2
  9. Mustard seed – 1 tspn
  10. Turmeric powder – 1/2 tspn
  11. Curry leaves – 4-5 twigs or 2 tblspn
  12. Salt – 1 tspn/to taste
  13. White/refined oil – 2 tblspn


 Wash the poha at least two times and soak it in water for 1 min. The poha will be soft but firm.  Must ensure not to over soak the poha otherwise the whole dish will be spoiled.

Heat oil in a pan. Put whole red chili, darken it and add mustard seeds. Let it splatter.

Add soaked daal, fry it till light brown, add curry leaves, fry for half min. Add coconut,   green chili and  turmeric powder. Fry for ½ min.

Add chopped vegetables, salt and ginger. Fry for 1 min. Add lemon juice and switch off the stove.

Add soaked poha and give a nice stir so that all the ingredients are nicely mixed with poha.

Transfer into serving bowl. Garnish with slice of lemon and coconut and curry leaf.
